"Of Woodland and Water" is a complex captivating artwork, involving the layering of many processes. This piece has been a joy for Gillian to create and captures the beauty of two of her major influences - woodland and water.
 
This work began with a simple layer of calico, to which Gillian added coloured fabrics and papers. They are densely stitched through with machine embroidery, which depicts the movement of a flowing stream. She then moulded the background using a clear fabric glue, before adding gold lustre and hand-stitching delicate beaded accents.
 
The sprig of leaves is the final layer and these are cut and moulded from Silver Birch bark found in local woodland.
 
The jewel colours and inviting textures are emphasised by raised mounting and the glazed, 8x10in deep box frame - both of which give the art a space to bloom.
